Hearing God’s voice is a profound, life-changing experience with an eternal promise of heaven. My final destination hinges on hearing and obeying God’s voice (John 8:47). Indeed, this revelation is a continuous reality throughout the Bible.
God’s voice is unique, distinct, and holy. It’s a divine dialect spoken in love, mercy, and forgiveness. He tells the truth, and His speech is spiritual. His tongue is full of grace.
In the Old Testament, God spoke through His Prophets. They conveyed to His people commandments and the penalties of disobedience to His word. Unsurprisingly, the Israelites stayed in and out of God’s favor. They rejected God’s messengers and killed many Prophets (Luke 13:34). Their deaf ears sealed their eternal death.
However, God wanted to save His people and kept His promise of sending the Messiah (Isaiah 7:14). He delivered Christ into the world. The Lord speaks through Jesus. He uses Jesus as humanity’s final covenant into His kingdom.
How Do I Hear God’s Voice?
There is only one way to hear God’s voice, which comes from Christ and speaks through the Holy Spirit. When Jesus walked on the earth, it unveiled God’s new way of communicating with humanity. This superseded His previous way of speaking and made it the only way into His kingdom (John 14:6).
One good example of hearing God’s voice came in Disciple Peter’s response to Christ’s question about whom they (the twelve disciples) thought He was. Peter told Jesus that He was the Son of the Living God (Matthew 16:16).
Then Christ responded by saying:
Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 16:17, NKJV)
In this verse, Christ shows God’s voice speaking through Peter. God spoke through him by proclaiming Jesus as the Lord’s son.
We also experience a similar way of hearing the Lord’s words. Whenever we hear God’s voice, we discover a divine intuition backed by the Holy Spirit. Our Father uses His Spirit as the only means of knowing His voice. This is God’s way of separating Himself apart from our emotional deception.
Another excellent assurance of hearing God’s voice is following Christ. So, to listen to the Lord’s words, I must build a personal relationship with Him. This means I must set aside time daily and spend time in God’s word. I have to implement Christ’s teachings, pray, and walk in the Spirit.
The more I engage in Jesus’ Deity, the better I hear God’s voice. Following this divine blueprint reveals that denying myself, picking up my cross, and standing firm on God’s truth isn’t difficult (Luke 9:23). Being in Christ lessens my burdens (Matthew 11:38-40).
As a result of abiding in Jesus, we become keen on hearing our Father’s voice. In return, Christ assures our salvation’s security.
Jesus promises:
My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. (John 10:27-28, NKJV)
As shown above, it’s in Christ that one hears God’s voice and discovers eternal security. Knowing that faith in Jesus brings forth an infinite place in the Lord’s kingdom makes my trials and tribulations worthwhile. Isn’t this revelation an incredible display of God’s unconditional love?
God’s Spiritual Voice
The Holy Spirit is God’s spiritual voice. Yes, He tells the Holy Spirit what to say on His behalf. We know this truth because Jesus disclosed it.
Christ said:
But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take from Mine and will disclose it to you. All things that the Father has are Mine; this is why I said that He takes from Mine and will disclose it to you. (John 16:13-15, NASB)
In essence, the Holy Spirit isn’t speaking alone. His words are from God. So we know that when He talks, it’s God’s voice. We hear His voice in scripture, prayer, with other believers, and at church. The Holy Spirit expresses God in truth with wisdom from heaven. We access God’s language through His Spirit. Everything the Holy Spirit says glorifies Jesus. It praises Him and guides us to do the same.
Did you notice that the Holy Spirit is the only way God reveals Christ to faithful believers?
Yes, this consciousness of Jesus’ ministry is God’s undeniable Spirit. It’s through the Holy Spirit that we know Christ died for our salvation, rose from the dead, and ascended back into heaven. This incredible truth unlocked the door to eternal life.
Final Thoughts
This is a brief discussion of hearing God’s voice. Many other scriptures disclose more ways to listen to His words and are there for your investigation. The Holy Spirit removes any confusion about the Lord’s words because it’s easy to mistake God’s voice for emotionalism. Many people proclaim that God spoke to them with new revelations. There are no new revelations from the Lord because the completion of the Bible has shown us all that He wants us to know.
